Hi to all Cinephiles! CUT is starting the year off with our first event being a cinema trip, per tradition. Yay!
We begin our event gathering in front of the dorms at 6:30. Then, we bike to Lab111 (25 minutes from the dorms) to attend a screening of the movie Tampopo (1985) directed by Juzo Itami. It is a Japanese comedy following a story of a ramen shop owner who, with the help of a truck driver, embarks on a quest of unwinding her fledgling business. Blending culinary passion with quirky vignettes about food and life, the film is a delightful exploration of human connection through the art of cooking. What we love most about this film is its unique blend of humour, heart, and an unconventional narrative that celebrates food as a universal language, showcasing the creativity and cultural richness of Japanese cinema.
Before the film, we will briefly gather in the expo room of Lab111 and introduce the film, as well as contextualise it within the Japanese film tradition. After the screening, we will host an informal discussion in the cafe/restaurant part of the cinema to share our thoughts on the movie.

We are planning on going on a cinema trip to the Palestinian Film Festival this October, specifically to the event “Fashion Programme” which described by the festival “features a collection of short films, commercials, and music videos all conceiving the fashioned body as bearer of violence and occupation. Whether at a catwalk or in an airport, the filmmakers understand the socio-political boundaries of fashion and seek to redefine them.” We find this very valuable and important to go to, as its important to attend screenings that tend to be more political and eye opening. The short films will include Maskhara (2020), Antenne (2021), Chic Point (2003), Body Tones (2022), Errorvision (2021), Homecoming queenz (2021); all of these short films will be incredibly valuable to experience.
We have 10 spaces, we decreased the number of people due to the fact that the event is so close to our other event, we do not expect that many people to sign up. This differs to our original budget draft, as we didn’t really take into consideration that tickets might not sell as much for our Tampopo cinema trip, and that our two events would be so close to each other.

Join CUT in yet another Cinema Trip of ours at LAB111. This time, we are travelling to participate in one of the Palestinian Film Festival screenings, namely “The Fashion Programme”, a collection of films, commercials, and music videos that center upon themes of gender performativity, resistance, and the impact of political oppression upon marginalised human identity and its manifestations. Through vibrant visuals and creative expression, the films critique societal expectations and the intersections of identity, body, and power within the modern context. They use art and fashion to challenge structures of control and offer new perspectives on freedom and self-expression in times of Palestinian repression. We are excited to embark on this trip with the AUCSA community, as we deem it valuable to politicise cinematic expression and expose ourselves to creative means of education that such interactions put forward. The screening will be followed by a Q&A afterwards, in which we will hear insights from the curator of the programme, as well as other guests involved in the process of organisation of the event.
